Raoul Lachaise

« My grand father, Raoul Antoine Ludovic LACHAISE was born in Lisle (Dordogne) in 1901. He married in 1923 in Verteillac (Dordogne) my grand-mother, Marthe QUINSENAC (whose father was killed during the First World War in 1915) and he became a peasant. They had a son (just one child), André LACHAISE (1925-2003). During the Second World War, my grand-father became a war prisoner in June 15th 1940 in Troyes (Aube) and he went to Stalag VII A in September. He worked in a farm till his liberation because of health problems in march 8th 1943. He went back to France and worked again in the family farm before the creation of a little company of wood and sawing (a sawmill) till the middle of the sixties. He died in 1988.
My family keep all the letters and cards he wrote from the stalag VII to his wife (specially), his son and his father.
My grand-father was lucky to continue in Germany, the job he knew and if he were unfortunate and very sad because his family was very far and the long time as a prisoner, he never complained about his life.
During the 1970’s, my parents travelled to Bavaria and they went to the farm where my grand-father worked as a prisoner. They meet the family and he seems they remember. They were welcome and it was a nice example of French and German reconciliation ».
